What this covers
Zinc work is a tiny share of the budget for a roof and the source of the great majority of leaks. Valleys, flashings, dormer junctions, chimney stacks: it is the detail points that fail, almost never the open field of the roof. In a country with two hundred days of rain, an undersized box gutter is unforgiving: it overflows in every heavy shower and the water goes into the masonry.

Zinc is still the benchmark: forty to fifty years, solderable, repairable, and it takes a patina. Coated aluminium costs less, goes up faster and comes in every colour, but its joints are glued or riveted, so they are weaker over time. Galvanised steel we advise against wherever there is road salt or urban air.
In most cases it is undersized, or it serves too much area for a single downpipe. A good Belgian downpour delivers more water than a standard gutter can carry away. The fix is rarely to replace everything: an extra downpipe and resized outlets are usually enough.
Yes, and we recommend it every autumn for houses surrounded by trees. While we are up there we check the brackets, the outlets and the flashings — it is the cheapest moment to find a problem.
