Our registered office is in Tienen, in the middle of this area. It is the region where we find the largest roofs anywhere in our working area — and the most asbestos.

The open country between Tienen and Landen carries two families of roof: the compact building of the village cores, with their grand town houses and concealed box gutters, and beyond them the farms and their outbuildings, where a single slope can be larger than ten house roofs put together.

The wind plays the leading part here. With no shelter, it always finds the tile that has worked loose at the verge or the ridge, and takes its neighbours with it. So we reinforce the fixings at the verge and the ridge as a matter of course, not as an option.

And then there is the fibre cement. Thousands of sheds, cowsheds and lean-tos here still carry pre-2001 sheets. The question generally comes up when a property is sold or converted, and then everything is urgent — when this is precisely the job that is better prepared in advance.
