Leak or storm damage
Sheet over first, photograph next, repair last. In that order your house stays dry and your insurance claim stays usable.

Six situations, and the right first move
Water is coming in while it rains
Put a bucket down, move what can be moved, and switch off the circuit if the water is running along a light fitting. Do not go up to look: a wet roof with loose tiles is the most dangerous place in the house.
Tiles have fallen into the garden
Cordon off the area so nobody walks underneath, and do not pick them up while there is still wind. Photograph everything where it fell — that picture is worth more to your insurer than a statement.
A branch on the roof
Do not pull on it. A trapped branch is often still holding a piece of the covering; tearing it away takes the tiles with it. We clear it from the right anchor points and sheet over straight afterwards.
A brown ring on the ceiling
Rarely an emergency, always a signal. The water almost never comes straight down: it runs along a beam or the roofing underlay and comes out several metres further on. Repainting without looking for the cause means the same ceiling next year.
Corrugated sheets lifted
Keep your distance and stop anyone walking underneath. A loose fibre cement sheet is more dangerous than the leak: it breaks as it falls, and the asbestos question is then added to it. We make it safe first.
The gutter is overflowing onto the facade
Usually a blockage, not a break. While it is raining it can wait; the facade, though, is drinking it in. On a concealed box gutter it is another matter: the water goes inwards, and then it is urgent.

Common questions
Emergency
As a rule no, and we would rather say so than promise otherwise. An emergency call goes to the front of the schedule for the next working day, and where the damage is bad we work for as long as it is light. Going up onto a wet roof at night is a good idea for nobody.
It is a separate item, and it appears separately on the quotation. It is never folded into the permanent repair without your knowing: you know what the emergency call-out costs and what the repair costs.
We supply the papers: a photo report from before the repair, a description of the defects found and a detailed quotation. You submit the claim to your broker or your insurer — that relationship is yours, and it moves faster when you have the papers to hand.
In most Belgian home policies, storm damage falls under the fire insurance, but the conditions and excesses vary a great deal. Read your policy again or call your broker before ordering any work: we cannot answer that question for you.
