Storm-damaged roof of an old house, covering shifted and broken

The roof the day after the storm

Make it watertight first, repair afterwards. In that order, not the other way round.

The situation

A westerly storm does not lift the tiles from above: it pushes air under the slope and prises them off from below. That is why the damage almost always starts at the verge or the ridge, and not in the middle. In the open countryside of Asse, Meise and Landen the attack is head-on; in town the wind swirls between the facades.

What we find

  • Tiles in the garden and a hole in the slope, bigger close up than from the street
  • A verge lifted where the wind has got underneath
  • Ridge tiles worked loose along the whole length, including where the roof looks intact
  • A torn roofing underlay letting the rain run straight onto the insulation

What we do

  • Sheet over and fasten down the same day — a tarpaulin that works loose makes the damage worse
  • Photograph everything before touching anything, for the insurance claim
  • Then inspect the whole slope, including the side that looks undamaged
  • Repair with reinforced fixings at the verge and the ridge, so the next storm has less to grip

What makes the difference

The set of photographs taken before the repair is worth more to your insurer than any statement made after the event. We always take them and hand them over, even if you submit the claim yourself.
